Why are my lifters still noisy?

well i got a subaru station wagon 1996 . lifters wore making some noise, took them down myself and the guy at Machine shop told me that they were cool , just to get the oil out of them so i did , but went home put everything back on , took me 30 minutes to di it , so i said cool im done fire up the engine and oops surprise they were worst now they are all making noises , i did everything the right way , car is a bit slower , so should i buy new ones or not ?
